Attention How the mind selects, follows and returns to experience. Mind-wandering The natural tendency of attention to drift into thought, memory, planning or imagination. Returning attention The practice of noticing distraction and gently coming back. Stress response How the body and mind respond to pressure, demand or perceived threat. Arousal The level of activation, energy or alertness in the body and nervous system. Settling Allowing the body and mind to become a little steadier, without forcing calm. Grounding Using body contact, sounds, sight or the environment to support steadiness. Body awareness Noticing sensations in the body as part of present-moment experience. Breath awareness Noticing the breath as a possible anchor for attention. Choice and comfort Understanding why people need options in posture, eyes, breath focus and practice style. Executive function Mental capacities such as planning, inhibition, flexible attention and working memory. Default mode network A brain network often discussed in relation to self-referential thinking, memory and mind-wandering. Salience network A network involved in detecting what seems important or relevant. Insula and body awareness A brain region often discussed in relation to interoception and subjective body awareness. Amygdala and threat detection A brain structure often discussed in relation to threat, salience and emotional learning.

Polyvagal theory A theory about autonomic state, social connection and threat response that is influential but should be presented carefully and not as settled fact. Vagal tone A measure often discussed in relation to regulation and flexibility, but easily oversimplified. Heart rate variability Variation in time between heartbeats, sometimes used as an index of autonomic flexibility, but not a simple measure of calm or mindfulness. Predictive processing The idea that the brain actively predicts and interprets experience rather than simply recording the world. Allostasis The body’s process of maintaining stability through change, anticipation and adaptation. Allostatic load The cumulative cost of repeated or chronic stress and adaptation demands. Neuroception A term from polyvagal theory referring to the nervous system’s detection of safety or threat, requiring careful explanation. Trauma and the nervous system A sensitive area requiring humility, care and appropriate referral boundaries. Dissociation and shutdown language Terms that should be used carefully and usually only within appropriate professional context. Pain and the nervous system Understanding pain as involving sensation, attention, meaning, emotion and nervous system processing.
